Update on Industry Waste Management Plan (IWMP)

South Africa’s Packaging Industry has finalised three Industry Waste Management Plans (IWMPs) that pertain to our company.

  • Packaging SA – An umbrella organisation covering all materials and not just plastic.

  • Polyco – Polyolefins

  • Petco – PET materials

In September 2018, these documents were submitted to the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) for consideration in terms of the Government Gazette and are under review. The deadline date for the submissions of plans has been extended to 5 February 2019 and the next steps in the process are as follows:

  • Assessment by Government after submission of plan

  • Publish plan for comment

  • Minister will ask Industry to be available in public sessions

  • Industry will be asked to respond to comments

  • Minister can ask Industry to change the plan

  • Revised plan will be republished for comment

  • New public participation sessions and comments handling

The process is expected to take another six to nine months to complete if Government does not enforce the process to be a government-administered model – a model that the industry has strongly objected to.
