Incorporating and living out Astrapak’s Core Values has played an important role in Marcom’s positive outlook, and General Manager Mr Gerhard van Reenen has attested that it is a process that cannot simply be handed over to his staff.

“You have to practice what you preach,” he said. “The Core Values are not something that you can simply hand over. It is something that you have to live each day so that it becomes a way of life.”

When sharing news on the success of the momentous achievement, Mr Van Reenen attributed safety best practices to his entire team, who have been dedicated and focused in the workplace, day in and day out.

Mr Van Reenen says that his team has acknowledged the importance of working in a safe environment, and that doing so is not simply to adhere to a set of rules laid out by Astrapak’s Head Office, but rather that it is a system that has been put in place for the betterment and well being of each and every team member, as well as their families. At the time of writing this article, Van Reenen confirmed an actual count of 543 days free of any disabling injuries.

“Having the team’s 100% commitment to the concept of working in a safe environment is a large contributing factor to the success that we have achieved,” said Mr Van Reenen. “They have realised that safety is not just a project, but a way of life. It is not a luxury, and they know they are not doing anyone else a favour by conforming to safety regulations. Near misses occur, but it is about preventing them as far as possible and being responsible in how we carry out our business on a daily basis.”

Communication is key, and the winning recipe for the team at Marcom is having open and clear communication channels. By communicating effectively from senior level right through to the staff on the factory floor, Van Reenen can ensure that each team member is adequately prepared and aware of the role that he or she contributes to the team.

“With a positive team, one can achieve great things and ultimately deliver excellence by providing all stakeholders return on their investment,” said Van Reenen.
